The stages of breast cancer are based on whether it is invasive or non-invasive, the size of the tumor, or whether the cancer has already metastasized to the other organs or not. It is important to identify the different stages in order to organize the different factors and features of the cancer. This way, the best treatment for the condition will also be identified.

Stage 0 – In this stage, the breast cancer is non-invasive, which means that it has not spread to other parts of the breast apart from the root location of the cancerous cells.

Stage 1 – In this stage, the breast cancer is invasive. Cancer cells are already breaking out of the part of the breast from which they originated and are invading neighboring normal tissues. However, the lymph nodes are not yet affected.

Stage 2 – This stage is divided into two subcategories: Stage 2A and stage 2B. In stage 2A, either no tumor can be found in the breast, but a small tumor can be found in the axillary lymph nodes, or a large tumor can be found in the breast. In stage 2B, either a large tumor can be found in the breast and the axillary lymph nodes.

Stage 3 – Stage 3 is also subdivided into categories: Stages 3A, 3B, and 3C, depending on the extent to which the cancer has spread. In stage 3, the tumor may spread to the lymph nodes above/below the collarbone, under the arm or near the breastbone, chest wall, and/or skin of the breast.

Stage 4 – In this stage, the cancer has already spread to other organs of the body.

Breast cancer, if detected at an early stage, can be cured easily.
